WellisAir Concerns and Common Questions, Answered

The short version

WellisAir is a filter-free hydroxyl air revitalizer, sold in the United States by WellisAir USA. It averages 4.9 out of 5 across more than 500 verified reviews. The most common criticism in those reviews is not performance — it is the ongoing cost of cartridges, and two things are true about that at once: it is a real recurring expense, and it is the only one.

This page is in two halves. First the tradeoffs that are genuinely tradeoffs, because a buyer deciding on a $549.99 device deserves them up front. Then the claims circulating on third-party review sites that describe a different machine entirely.

  • It costs $549.99

It does, and against a $150 tower that is a real gap. The comparison that matters is coverage: one unit is rated for up to 1,000 sq ft, so most homes need one rather than one per room.

If it does not earn its place, the 90-Day Clean Air Guarantee is a full refund of the purchase price within 90 days of delivery — money back, not store credit.

    Refund policy
  • Cartridges are an ongoing cost

This is the most frequent criticism in our own reviews, and it is a fair one. One cartridge lasts about 90 days, so four a year.

That is $239.96 a year buying singles one at a time, $184.49 as a one-time 4-pack, or $162.35 a year — about $13.53 a month — on a subscribed 4-pack. Subscriptions can be canceled at any time. There are no filters to replace and no UV lamps to change, and electricity adds about $0.25 a month.

    Cartridge pricing
  • There is no CADR rating

There is not, and there will not be. CADR measures how fast a device clears particles from a chamber. It is the right yardstick for a filter and a meaningless one here, because a hydroxyl radical does not capture particles — a CADR figure for this unit would be near zero and would tell you nothing useful.

The equivalent question for a hydroxyl device is how fast it reduces gases, and that is measured: 99.5% of toluene in 2 hours, 80% of ammonia and 65% of formaldehyde in 4 hours (Korea Conformity Laboratories, report 026961).

    How the technologies differ
  • There is no readout telling you it worked

There is no particle display, and the indicator light is an air-quality sensor reading the room — not a measurement of the unit’s own output.

What you can judge directly is odors: cooking, pets, mustiness, smoke that gets indoors. That is what most reviewers describe noticing first. It is also subjective, which is why the guarantee runs a full 90 days rather than 30.

  • Some cartridges add a light citrus scent

The unscented cartridge is the default, and it is genuinely unscented — hydrogen peroxide, no d-limonene, nothing added to the air. If you are sensitive to fragrance, that is the one.

The barely scented citrus version is a choice, not the standard, and plenty of customers specifically prefer it. The air treatment is identical either way, and both cost the same in every pack size.

    Unscented cartridges
  • What we do not claim

We do not claim WellisAir disinfects bacteria or viruses in your home. The one peer-reviewed microbial result is a 66.7% reduction in airborne molds and yeasts in a working dental clinic.

We do not claim it removes particles; it is not a filter. And it is not mold remediation on its own — it will not dry a wall or remove a colony. It works on the airborne and surface side while the moisture problem gets fixed.

    Mold and mildew
  • That it contains a HEPA filter and covers 200–400 sq ft

It contains no filter of any kind, and one unit is rated for up to 1,000 sq ft. The table above lists these side by side.

This matters beyond pedantry: a buyer told this is a HEPA machine will judge it by particle counts, which is not what it does, and will expect a filter-replacement cost that does not exist.

  • That the ozone chemistry produces formaldehyde indoors

The concern is reasonable in general — ozone reacting with terpenes in household air can produce formaldehyde and ultrafine particles. It was measured here.

In CRESCA’s large-chamber test, formaldehyde read 33 µg/m³ in the room running the unit against 500 µg/m³ in the untreated control. Fine particles read 6 µg/m³ against the control’s 113. Both come from the same reaction, so if that chemistry were running at a rate worth worrying about, both would have climbed. Neither did.

    Ozone, measured
  • That the third-party testing is unnamed or vague

It is named and published. A peer-reviewed clinical study in Medicina Oral Patología Oral y Cirugía Bucal (2023) measured a 66.7% reduction in airborne molds and yeasts in a working dental clinic, p = 0.03.

Ozone output was tested by Intertek to the UL 867 method. The unit is CARB certified and ETL listed. VOC performance was tested by Korea Conformity Laboratories (report 026961) and by CRESCA at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (report 20190930).

If it does not work in your home

The 90-Day Clean Air Guarantee is a full refund of the purchase price within 90 days of delivery. Every unit carries 2 years of parts and labor, and a lifetime warranty is available as a $200 upgrade.

Ninety days is deliberate. What this device does is judged mostly by smell, over weeks, in your own rooms — not in a chamber and not in a week.

WellisAir questions, answered

Is WellisAir legitimate?

Yes. Wellis Air USA is a US distributor based in Rutledge, Tennessee, rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau, selling a unit manufactured by Wellis in South Korea. The device is CARB certified and ETL listed, its ozone output was tested by Intertek to the UL 867 method, and its performance has been measured by Korea Conformity Laboratories, by CRESCA at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and in a peer-reviewed clinical study published in Medicina Oral Patología Oral y Cirugía Bucal in 2023.

More than 500 verified customer reviews average 4.9 out of 5, and purchases are covered by a 90-day full refund.

What do people complain about most?

Cartridge cost. It is the criticism that comes up most often in our own reviews, usually from long-term customers buying cartridges one at a time at $59.99. Four a year at that price is $239.96; on a subscribed 4-pack it is $162.35 a year, about $13.53 a month.

The second most common is the up-front price of $549.99. After those, the recurring questions are about the absence of a CADR rating and the absence of a readout showing the unit working — both answered above, and both consequences of this not being a particle filter.

Does WellisAir actually work?

On gases and odors, yes, and that is where the measurements are. Korea Conformity Laboratories measured 99.5% of toluene removed in 2 hours, 80% of ammonia and 65% of formaldehyde in 4 hours. CRESCA measured 94.3% of total VOCs and 93.4% of formaldehyde at 30 minutes against a simultaneous untreated control.

On microbes, the one peer-reviewed result is a 66.7% reduction in airborne molds and yeasts in a working dental clinic, p = 0.03. We make no bacteria or virus claims. On particles, it is not a filter and does not claim to remove them.

Is WellisAir worth it compared with a HEPA purifier?

It depends entirely on which problem you have, because they are different problems. A HEPA filter is a particle filter — as the EPA puts it, a CADR rating is “for particles only.” If your concern is pollen, dust or smoke particulate, that is what particle filtration is measured for.

Gases are the other half: VOCs, off-gassing, cooking and pet odors, musty smells. Filters do not address them; the EPA points to activated carbon or another gas-specific approach. WellisAir works on that side chemically, breaking the molecules apart rather than holding them on a surface until it is full. Many homes genuinely need both.

Can I return it if it does not work for me?

Yes. The 90-Day Clean Air Guarantee is a full refund of the purchase price within 90 days of delivery. Every unit also carries two years of parts and labor, and a lifetime warranty is available as a $200 upgrade, included as standard with the Pro package.
